Pool Heating in South Africa

An unheated SA pool sits cold for roughly half the year. Heating it well — without wrecking the Eskom bill — comes down to three options: solar panels, a heat pump, and a good cover. Here's how they compare and who to call.

    Solar Pool Heating

Roof- or ground-mounted panels circulate pool water through black tubing. Near-zero running cost once installed; typical payback in two to four seasons. Best for extending the swim season by 2–3 months.

    Pool Heat Pumps

Move heat from the air into the pool — a fraction of the electricity a resistive element would use. Holds a set temperature through Highveld winter. Best for year-round swimming.

    Solar Blankets

Bubble-style thermal cover that floats on the water. Cuts evaporation and overnight heat loss, lifts temperature 4–8°C in sun. Cheapest upgrade with the biggest combined saving.
