Renovating an existing pool is almost always cheaper than rebuilding — provided the shell is structurally sound. This guide breaks renovation into the three tiers we use sitewide and then lists individual line-item ZAR ranges so you can sanity-check a quote.

Renovation tiers — 2025 ZAR ranges

    Line-item costs (2025)

    Marbelite resurface

    R28,000 – R55,000

Most common on 10–15 year-old concrete pools.

    Pebble or quartz finish (upgrade)

    R55,000 – R130,000

20% – 40% premium over marbelite, longer life.

    Full glass-mosaic retile

    R90,000 – R250,000+

Material price dominates; labour 25 – 35% of total.

    Coping / edge replacement

    R12,000 – R45,000

Travertine and granite cost 2 – 3× standard concrete copings.

    Variable-speed pump retrofit

    R9,500 – R18,000

Pays back in 12 – 24 months on Eskom tariff.

    Salt chlorinator retrofit

    R12,000 – R22,000

Includes cell, controller and basic install.

    LED light retrofit (per light)

    R3,500 – R7,500

Replaces old halogen niches; usually 1 – 2 per pool.

    Sand filter replacement

    R4,500 – R12,000

    Glass filter media adds R1,800 – R3,500.

    Crack injection / structural repair

    R6,500 – R45,000+

Depends on length, location and whether shell movement is ongoing.

New decking / paving (per m²)

    R650 – R2,400 / m²

Travertine, marble and porcelain at the top end.

    Red flags in renovation quotes

    • "Resurface" priced as a single line item with no surface preparation breakdown — strip-out and key-coating is 30 – 40% of a quality marbelite job.
    • No exclusion list — quotes that don't name what's excluded almost always trigger change orders.
    • Equipment "upgrades" using single-speed pumps in 2025 — variable-speed has been mandatory pricing for serious renovations for years.
    • Structural crack repair without a written cause finding — patching without diagnosing movement just delays the next repair.

The hidden side of a renovation budget

Hidden pool costs iceberg An iceberg showing that the quoted pool price is only the visible tip, while heating, decking, fencing, landscaping, covers, automation and rock excavation sit below the surface as costs usually excluded from the quote. The Quote Is Just the Tip What a headline pool price leaves out — the real budget sits below the surface. 2026 ZAR. waterline The quote you sign ≈ R220 000 shell, filtration, basic paving allowance What's actually in the budget ↓ USUALLY EXCLUDED FROM THE QUOTE Heating (heat pump)extends the swim season+R28k–R55k Decking & pavingbeyond the basic allowancefrom R20k Safety fencinglegally required barrier+R6k–R18k Landscapingrestoring the garden after the buildfrom R15k Cover, lighting & controlscover, LED, salt chlorinator, controls+R15k–R85k Rock excavation / hard sitethe budget-breaker nobody quotes for+R30k–R120k Before you sign: ask exactly what the quote excludes. Headline resurface price is only the visible tip — pump retrofits, recommissioning, decking and equipment refreshes add 30–80% more.

    Estimate post-renovation running cost

A renovation is the moment to right-size pump and heating spec. Compare scenarios with and without a variable-speed pump, cover or heat pump before signing — the operating-cost delta often justifies the upfront upgrade inside 24 months.
