Almost every finish decision on a South African concrete pool comes down to four options: marbelite, pebble, quartz or a full glass-mosaic retile. The price gap between them is 3× to 5×, but the lifespan gap is roughly the same — so the right pick depends on how long you plan to keep the pool and how disciplined the pool chemistry actually is.

Which finish is right for you?
You want the cheapest working finish
Marbelite. Accept the 8–15 year cycle and budget an acid wash at year 5 and year 10.
You want the best cost-per-year
Pebble. At ~2× the cost of marbelite for ~2× the lifespan, and with far better chemistry tolerance, it is the sweet spot for most SA family pools.
You have children or elderly swimmers
Quartz. Pebble is more grippy than marbelite but coarse underfoot; quartz keeps most of pebble's durability with a smoother finish.
The pool is a design feature
Glass mosaic. The material dominates cost (labour is 25–35% of total), but it is the only finish that reads as architectural and lasts 25–40 years without a full refurb.
Your pool is on dolomite ground
Marbelite or pebble — both are re-openable if a future geotech event demands access. Avoid full-cost mosaic until the ground behaviour has been observed for 2+ summers post-build.
Cost-per-year, honestly
The single number that changes most opinions is cost divided by expected service life. On the mid-point of each 2026 range for an 8m × 4m pool:
- Marbelite: R41,500 ÷ 11.5 years ≈ R3,600 / year
- Pebble: R75,000 ÷ 16 years ≈ R4,700 / year
- Quartz: R97,500 ÷ 17.5 years ≈ R5,600 / year
- Glass mosaic: R170,000 ÷ 32.5 years ≈ R5,200 / year
Marbelite wins on nominal cost-per-year — but only if you actually replace it on schedule. Pebble and mosaic pay you back in fewer disruptions, less downtime, and a shell that shrugs off the two-week chlorinator failure that would otherwise stain a marbelite surface permanently.
